Day 18 - Horrifying Day

The day start with another lecture in the morning. This is our third IS lecture on Chinese culture! We are introduced to many new different things like Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism! Although there may be many different types of religion, I think all of this religions want us to be like 'Saint' instead of 'Animal.' One such way is to love other just as we loved ourselves. By doing so, we will not want to harm others since we loved them just as we loved ourselves! In the afternoon lecture, it was held by Dr Tan! It's been a long time since I attended her lecture. It feels great to be seeing her teaching us again! Although she may be quite fast at the start of the lecture, she reexplained those things that we are not sure.

During the evening, as we are free, we decided to go to 'Hu Quan Ye Shi' (Night Market) to explore and shop since such markets are not common in Singapore, not knowing of the danger awaiting for us. We took a cab there as we are not sure of which bus to take. It is a 30min ride and it cost $35 yuan which is pretty cheap when converted to Sing dollars as the cabs in Singapore usually charged S$10 or more for a 30 min ride. The night market was lively that night and there many different food stalls selling different kinds of food! Moreover, we get to see animals that are alive in the cage and they are all about to get slaughtered and be cooked. Sometimes, I find that human are pretty cruel to kill alive animals and consume them. The image of blood oozing out disgust me but I think that this is the way of life where animals are meant to be food for us.

After dinner, we went shopping to find cheap stuffs that we could buy back to Singapore. The place is quite similar to the bugis street in Singapore where there are many small shops and most of them are selling stuff for female! Hence, it takes us only a few minutes to finish exploring the place since there are not much stuffs for the male! Finally, at around 9pm we decided to travel back while the other 4 girls continue shopping. As we had 5 people at that time, we had no choice but to split into groups of 2 and 3 to travel back by cab. For myself, I am with one of my friends, Wei Seng. The first unlucky things was that we found a taxi and was about to enter. However, a guy came, open the door and just went in. At that moment, we stunned there, totally stunned. We were shocked that people here are so inconsiderate. Furthermore, that guy is an adult. How could he do such things to students like us? This then reminds me of the recent toddler girl in China who was ran over by 2 cars and no one came forward to help her up. I find that this is really true in China where people are inconsiderate and heartless at times.

Next, we had our most horrifying experience. We finally got into a cab and was on our way home. On our way back, the taxi driver kept saying weird stuff like he hate Singaporeans and asked if we are Singaporeans and whether or not we are rich. Furthermore, when he brought us to some deserted and dark streets, he started calling his friends saying things like there are 2 Singaporean students in his car. At that very moment, fear struck me. I can feel my heart beat increasing. I knew there was no turning back now. Deep in my heart, I made a silent prayer hoping that we will be safe. I started glancing around the road to look for sign boards to prepare myself for the worst. Images of students getting kidnapped and tortured came flashing through my mind. 'Will I end up like them?' I thought to myself. Memories of my parents, relatives and friends came into my mind. If I were to be kidnapped, one thing that I would really regret is that I had not been a filial piety child to my parents. They had slogged all days just to give me a better life and I had not given them any things in return. I had to survive! I can't be kidnapped! Praying earnestly to the God, I hope that both of us will return back safely.

Fortunately, minutes later, we finally saw a familiar place, the fishball stall that is located before the university! We had gotten back home safely! Upon knowing that, I heaved a sigh of relief. Praise the Lord for keeping us safe and sound. After this incident, I had learnt to treasured my life even more. This is the life given to me by my parents and I should take good care of it. I should not be so selfish to go to places to enjoy myself despite knowing that it may be dangerous and my parents will be upset if anything happens. For the remaining days in Wuhan, I must learn not to go to places unsafe especially at night and to take cabs in groups of 4 instead of 2 or 3. I must also ensure that it is safe when we travel to and fro before going to a certain venue to have fun. It is really a hard lesson learnt for both of us! Hope we will be fine tomorrow!

That;s all for the horrifying day. Wish to have a better tomorrow!

  2. I think that HuQuan night market was an interesting place. Though I didn't get a chance to visit it, from what you posted, I can tell that it was a great place. It was interesting how the have alive animals caged before they cook it. Though, the process of them slaughtering it would be disgusting and cruel, it is definitely something we won't see here in Singapore(which I am rather thankful of) but, it was great that you had the chance to be able to observe it.

Also, about the cab part, if I were in your position I would be scared too maybe twice as scared us being a girl. But, I am glad you learnt your lesson to travel in bigger groups and not take too much risk. Like people say, life is precious and you only live once.
